Hiiv got this old welder off a friend, it works but im wanting to know some specifications on it and as its so old i couldnt find any information on the net about it. here are sum photoshttp://members7.clubphoto.com/geoff1...ner-6a6b.phtmlim getting the hang of using the stick welding but as in all things practise makes perfect
Reply:Hi GeoffCIG or Commonwealth Industrial Gases were a very major welding manufacture and supply company of all things welding in Australia for many, many years from the 50's to the late  90s. The line of Transarc welders obviously had their beginnings as EMF which was a British owned (I think ) company. The welder manufactured in Australia,I suspect  would be for 240 volt input as that is what we have as domestic single phase supply.I had a latter  model Transarc welder that sported aluminium windings around the transformer. That made it light but it had no grunt. It did survive immersion in a flood only requiring a couple of days drying out. I would say  your machine is around  50 years old or so.Perhaps an electrical check on it may be prudent.Hope it helps youGrahame
Reply:thanks for the infoit does run off 240 volts and it blew the 20amp breaker in the downstairs of my house, but only after a while welding.hey my dad says that there is some ratio to which you arc weld... il explainif your electrode is 30cm long then you make your weld 10cm. like what ever you electrode length is you 1/3 it or 1/4 it and thats the length your weld should be. (assuming you hav the right electrode size) i hope this makes sense
Reply:I can't say i have heard of that oneThe length of the deposit gets back to the amperage set on your machine and of course the electrode wire diameter.I teach my welding  kids this."Remember the boss may get savage if the stuff up the weld"S =  Speed of travelA=   Angle of electrodeV=   Voltage ( set by arc length you are holding)A=   Amperage  set for the electrode gauge or diameterG=   Gauge or diameter of the electrodeE=   Electrode stype to suit the metal your are welding onYou begin by choosing the most suitable electrode and work back.I hope this  helpsGrahame
