spot welding analysis, how shearing test conducted

I'm just new in this field so i would like to know if there someone can help me in figure out how the test was conducted. from the preparation and to analyzed the data and also if some do have link about this topic, kindly post it to me through this forum.kindly all your help, i really thank and may with your help can help me to complete my thesis in order to get a bachelor in mechanical engineering. thank you

Reply:When I worked with sheet metal workers, they always tested the spot welder adjustment setting before putting the job proper, into the machine.This was achieved by the operator using the same gauge scrap metal and performing a test weld.One piece of the test plate was placed in a bench vice and the other  piece gripped by  vice grip pliers. A successful test was indicated if one could tear the spot weld button out of the parent plate and leave a hole. The spot weld failed if the two pieces of plate just merely separated, indicating little fusion with the adjoining plate.Adjustments also included the contact angle on the spot welding electrodes and dressing of the contact points.I hope this helpsGrahame

Reply:The specs are for standard tests are in a lot of places, among them the Welding Handbook from AWS, which most university technical libraries will have, and the SAE (society of automotive engineers) also publish standard performance tests. A couple of the tests:Peel test: pull the parts apart like turning the ages in a bookShear test: pull the pieces opposite directions in the plane of the sheets.As said, Welding Journal has had a lot in the last couple years (latest issue had some nice process performace photos and analysis)
