so I have some minor body work that need to be done to my truck, i need to weld in a floor pan and put on a cab mount. I have never welded and i think this is as good of a time as any to learn. I do understand that a MIG with gas is most likely the best route. But what kind of amperage should i look for? I mean the thickest i could ever see myself doing is 1/4 on the frame, but its still early to say that. do you guys have any suggestions on a "beginners" welder?? Theres a MIG welder for cheap secondhand and i was thinking maybe i would get it. 100 bucks?Kodiak model 152 115 volt 60hz 27 amp 4 settings: 1)100% duty cycle, welding amps 35, OC volts (DC) 16. 2)80% duty cycle, welding amps 50, OC volts (DC) 17. 3)30% duty cycle, welding amps 80, OC volts (DC) 18. 4)10% duty cycle, welding amps 100, OC volts (DC) 20. Maximum OC volts (DC) 41. will that work for my sort of jobs? any info is great. thanks guys.
Reply:It will do all your sheet metal but dont' think about your frame.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:According to the info you posted it should work great. I couldn't find any info on the welder, On the net so I can only go with what you posted. As to learning to mig weld on sheet metal and especially on the vehicle, I think you mat find it a little frustrating and very hard at times. Migs are great for this type of work but their is a art and technique to do good sheet metal work. After you get your welder. play around on some thinker steel to start and then move to the thinner material. After you get a little practice in post some pis's and ask any question so we can help.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:yep, its gotta work.  Hate to see you buy something that craps out on you 1/4 of the way into it and find out you can no longer get parts or repair work done on the welder.   Stick with a name brand.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:Thanks guys. all considered. I agree about having something with a real name. Does this sound like a better deal? http://detroit.craigslist.org/tls/308276505.htmlunderstand money is the issue here. I want something that will hold up. And I'm deffinently not going to be doing any work you can see on the outside of the truck or anythign super extensive. It all just has to hold. Any way thanks ahead.kyle
Reply:anyone?? thanks.
Reply:I'm not sure where to get parts for that MIG. Try calling Sears first, to see if they stock parts, then if they do, offer the guy $125. Always check to make sure you can get consumables and parts.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Just checked on Sears website. All parts and consumables are available for this mig welder model 20511. The welder brand is a Century by the way.

Reply:If its a MIG, you need .023 wire and some gas like Co2 or C/25.You might be able to visit a scrap yard for practice stuff.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
