Well at work I needed to weld soemthing up. I have nevered use their welder befor, so i clamped the washer and bolt on a piece of angle iron and placed it on top the the welder to weld it up. Well i only got one tack befor the welder quit on me. Where the wire comes off the wheel and goes to the infeed wheel broke. The wire was all white, i guess it heated up inside and broke. So did i casue it to break? Another work told me he also did that to him earlier too..I'm just wondering if it was from me welding on top of the welder maybe casueing it to fry..its a pretty big welder and has all steel covering...oh yeah, its just a mig 120V
Reply:It would be helpful to have more information. What brand welder? What type of wire are you using? Is the welder hooked up correctly for the wire - FCAW vs. GMAW? Do you have an instruction manual for reference?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:You have big problems.  The wire is supposed to get its electricity from the contact tip.  Its hot (electrically) all through the machine right up to and including the roll.  If you have a ground where its not supposed to be in the machine, it would burn the wire off.  More commonly known as a short.  Look where the wire burnt off and see what is up.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:You must have a short somewhere as David mentions above. You will need to test and get the corrected as most likey it will get worse as time goes on.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Well i dont know nothing about this welder.I too think its a short, but i dont know if i caused it from wleding on top of the welder or if its another problem...I dont really think its me becasue is also happened to another worker, he even told me befor i used it that the wire inside gets charged up and breaks, it turns red...But then the boss came in and said he fixed it??, but it did it to me toolol, i drew a little picture
Reply:i m thinking you shorted the welder inside.. welding ON TOP  of the welder can't be good..... you grounded to the welder then  put amps on welder case   pull apart an look inside  could be fried GOOD LUCK
Reply:It I seen someone welding on the top of my welder what would come out of my mouth would not be postable in this forum.
Reply:Is it that bad?Unless the other worker was welding on the welder too, i just dont think that i casued it.
Reply:Two issues here.1) what caused the failure.2) using a welder for a welding table.Number 2 increases the odds of number 1 by about a hundred fold.  I'm sort of chuckling and sort of not. More amazed than anything.  "White wire" could be as simple as very old flux core in a hostile environment and the effects of electrolysis. Or maybe the tag end scraping the walls of the case as it goes around in circles. Or maybe welding on top of the welder. Under normal conditions the input and output of this welder are two seperate circuits. AC in DC out. The work lead (ground) of the welding side is electrically seperated from the ground/CASE ground of the input side. Seperated until you lay the worked piece on top of the painted metal surface of the welder. After that all bets are off. My crystal ball sees a burnt work lead clamped to less than perfectly clean metal laying on the painted surface of an electrically grounded welder. My crystal ball sees free roaming electrons looking for a home.  I'll leave the other aspects of using a welder as a work table alone. I use the hood of my wifes car. Lots bigger.
Reply:as for if YOU did it ???it  just you touched it last
Reply:I would say you shorted the machine wiring. If someone used one of my welders as a welding table, he wouldn't have to worry about it. He wouldn,t be around any longer.Clarke 130EN C25Lincoln 225 AC Stick(1968)Smith O/A RigHF 4X6 Red BandsawBlack & Decker Pro Chopsaw16 Speed Drill PressSpeedglas XL HelmetHarbor Freight Stuff
Reply:Well i guessed I will always learn the heard way, lol.I will try to see if i can get it working on monday, becasue I thing it will still work maybe. I'll rerun the wire where it broke and leave it like that. The infeed wheels still turn but the wire is broken so its not coming out
