I am working on a project where I need to weld a flange for a disc brake to one of these Spicer brand pinion yokes for an ORV.  I have lots of experience welding with TIG and MIG, but no experience with Nickel rod, stick welding or welding to cast for that matter.  I can't confirm this to be cast steel or cast iron.  I have doubts that it is cast iron due to strength needed on a standard 3rd member/rear end, but I don't want to base my decisions with my hunch.  Is there a welding process I can rely on with this unknown material, or would have to be cast steel for this strength needed? Reply:I believe those are cast from Nodular Iron which can be readily welded with TIG or MIG using ER70S-6 with no problem. The ends that I buy for the 9" Differential housings I build are cast Nodular iron and I weld those with either process and regular ER70S.I'd try to contact SPICER (DANA products) before you weld it to verify it's construction but I know that the ends and yokes from Currie are all Nodular Iron.- PaulLast edited by ZTFab; 04-16-2007 at 09:37 PM.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Those are Nodular..No worries.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I forgot there were different types of cast iron  and didn’t know the ductile type was weldable. Thanks, I’ll look into the TIG with ER70S-6
Reply:I Would Guess It Is Cast Steel, you Could Use Mild Rod 7018lh Or Wire, If Is Cast Iron I Would Use Nickle Cast  Rod Only, works Better Than Wire
Reply:well, we used the ER70S-6 wire and did a weld test by breaking the weld in half.  Then we were able to break some of it off of the casting with a chisel.  I haven't used a nickel rod before, so I am clueless with it.  Is that meant for filling cracks in castings or does that a wire have a strength like the ER70S-6?From what I understand the ER70S-6 has 70,000KSI of tensile strength.  For the casting, I just need about 40,000KSI.One more dumb question...Is there only one type of nickel rod?
Reply:No, there are 2 types that I know of - Nickel 55 and Nickel 99. Nickel 55 - for cast iron, high strength, stronger than nickel 99, machinable. Nickel 99 - for cast iron, light to medium weight castings, higher ductile strength than nickel 55, easier to machine than nickel 55.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Do the spark test.  Hit ist on a gringing wheel.  Small almost nonexhistant reddish (sp?) sparks mean cast iron.  Bigger yellow sparks mean cast steel.  Cast steel welds great with 7018 OR ER70S-6.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

The weld metal is deposited in short beads and may be peened lightly with a blunt tool to assist in relieving stresses and preventing spread of cracks. Preheating to 200ºF is useful in relieving stresses. Reply:The above is the info I found on the two nickel rods.  One thing I didn’t mention is I will be welding these to C1018 steel.  I notice the 55 mentions it can weld to nodular iron and the 99 says it can weld to steel...  Would one electrode/TIG wire be suitable for welding mild steel to nodular iron?Last edited by YFZ; 05-01-2007 at 12:55 PM.
