Reply:Each color is run at a different amperage or direction.The blue root and fill passes must be run at 56.7658 amps per millimeter of rod thickness (30.456 if counting the flux); downhand.The red hot and cap passes are at 68.382 and 57.349 amps, respectively; uphand.The green fill pass one must be run while upside down and blindfolded or you fail.That was fun.
Reply:Mac - no test - fairly new car hobby - bought a cheapie welder (HFT 151 (220v. 150amp) - haven't tried it yet due to work demands (of the non-mechanical kind) - and literally am just trying to learn a bit before I fire the thing up - thanks! edp.s. is your last post real or just razzing?
Reply:MAC702Has the AWS changed or is that Nevada specific?I recall 42.333A/mm for root and 4th bead (fill), and flux measurement wasn't included, just wire size. i.e. a 1/8" or 3.17mm electrode is run at 134A downhand.

Reply:What is the purpose of the hot pass?  Why is it different than a regular fill?
Reply:For SMAW(stick welding) of pipe, the hot pass is used to quickly burn out small amounts of slag trapped along the edge of the root pass. This is slag that can not be removed easily by chipping or wire brushing. The hot pass can also be used to reshape the root pass by using high current settings and a faster than normal travel speed.City of L.A.
