I just purchased a HH187 and started welding for first time ever. I think I am doing decent. I am just using flux core wire as of now. Haven't hooked up gas yet.  My ?'s are concerning the bead appearance and penetration. I am just practicing running a bead as of right now til I get it down very well. It appears to be a good bead to me. I know it is supposed to look like a row of nickels. Sometimes I can see the definition between the beads (each nickel) i guess you'd say. Sometimes it looks like one big bead with no seperation. Does this make it a BAD weld? What do I need to do to get the definition in the bead? How do you check your penetration? Sometimes I see where there is actually weld on the oppositte side of the weld and others it just looks like it was heated on the other side?  How does it sound like I am doing so far? Any input is appreciated. Thx. in advance.

Reply:Here are some pics. Let me know what you think.
Reply:Sorry about the poor quality on couple of them. Having a hard time keeping the bead straight also.

Reply:A row of nickels or a stack of dimes is about the last thing you should work on.
Reply:Well if that's the case I think I am doing pretty good. What about the penetration question?
Reply:I'll try to get some better pics in a lil bit. The wire spool is giving me fits.
Reply:O.K. here are some welds I just did. I want to make sure I am getting good beads, which I think I am, before I start joining metal.

Reply:Try just attaching the pictures from your computer. Everything doesn't have to be on a web site or hosted. Keep it simple.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
