I received a large empty medical oxygen tank. I tapped the empty tank with a hammer and it made a mid range tone, but did not resonate well. I cut off the bottom of the tank and much to my surprise the tone became quite high, but did resonate better. Has anyone ever tried this? Does anyone have any ideas regarding making the tone deeper? Reply:I would assume that the tank needs to be bigger to get a deeper tone. You'll probably need to weld more material on to it or get a bigger tank. Just curious what are you going to use this gong for?Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Stick Linde HDA-300 MillerMatic DVI MIG Miller Dynasty 200DX Hypertherm Powermax 1000
Reply:The smaller the length..The higher the pitch..To a point anyway...Sorta like hollow wind chimes..would go up octaves and scales depending on length..I'm afraid you dont have a "gong" per say..You have a big hollow bell..And thats from a bonified drummer ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Zapster, Thanks for the clarification on "bell" vs "gong". I really wasn't quite sure what to call it! I never thought of clanging it from inside like a bell, I have been hitting it from outiside like a gongl. You have my curiousity up, I think that I will strike it from inside and see if the sound changes any, although I doubt it will. I guess that I will have one whale of a long tube to get the deep sound that I was hoping for!!! Born2Weld
Reply:born, try cuting it on an angle. around a 2" drop should do fine. i made one for my daughter a few years back. i plasma cut a horse to hang on it with a 1" nut for a bonger. took a good gust to get sounds out of it."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Asian temple bells are hit from the outside by a timber swung on ropes. Sound wont change alot no matter how it's struck(inside or outside)It's the physics of the bell shape, length, thickness, ect that determine the tone and pitch. Will sound a bit different depending on what you hit it with.
