With the stress and rigors of working on racecars all day long, I need a way to relax when I get home. I've decided to do something I've waited quite a while to do, and that is to get into a bit of metal sculpting. Primarily decorative lamps, side tables, things of that nature. My question for those of you who do the same and profit from your artwork, is how/where do I go about selling the occasional odd piece? With the cost of materials being as high as they are, I'd like to at least make my money back on the pieces I elect not to keep, just to supplement the hobby. Lord knows I don't have the time nor patience to put up a website, set up at a craft show, etc. Any input or suggestions in this department?
Reply:Around here there is a farmer's market every Saturday morning during the summer where a lot of people sell all sorts of crafts. I would check your local paper for farmer's markets or art shows. Maybe even a local art studio might buy your products.Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Stick Linde HDA-300 MillerMatic DVI MIG Miller Dynasty 200DX Hypertherm Powermax 1000

Reply:Thanks for the advice. I know of a few places in PA that will do it, but I'd have to do some hunting in CT.How well does the ebay route go for this sort of work?
Reply:If you are between connecticut and PA, you are going through about th best zone I know for selling through dealers. Hit New Hope, PA and Lambertville, NJ, for a start. Lots of shops, lots of dealers, lots of $$$$. I used to use a dealer in Red Bank, NJ (he is now long gone). Found him by just walking around to the dealers with my brag book, he bit so I brought some stuff in. Plenty of other places in NJ, New York, and conn.I couldn't tell you how Ebay would work, but unless you already have a demand or a good gimmick, I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
Reply:I reckon people expect to get a bargain on Ebay. And you'd have to parcel up the thing and ship it etc.

Reply:I don't know much about your area, but around here there are lots of arts and crafts festivals scattered around on various weekends. I will build a few pieces when I have time and then stockpile them until I have enough to warrant going to a festival for a day. I haven't carried anything home from one as of yet, and usually will have an order or two for something I sold out of.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:I'd be happy to set you up a small site to display your work, contact information and such. Think of a name you want, we buy the domain name (www.superartbysupe.com) and we start creating a few pages. Real easy...for me. Super easy for you.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Look at e-Bay, just for the sake of knowing how many people do the same kind of stuff, quality, quantity, prices etc. That would be a good starting point. But don't forget that people like to touch the craft stuff before they buy, so craft shows are a good place for it. Plus - people go to those shows are ready to spend some cash. The more places you find the better: e-Bay, your own website, gallery, craft shows, etc.One important part is a "stickability". Expect to stick to this for a long time in order to build a reputation.Good luck!Last edited by AndreiR; 07-06-2007 at 01:48 AM.
Reply:Consider your local craigslist. Find a city here: http://www.craigslist.org/about/cities.htmlThis is a free classified ad site with locations all over the world. You can post pics and since it's local, you don't need to do the shipping thing. Here's one of my older listings. http://boise.craigslist.org/hsh/342431142.htmlGood luck.Bob |
