When I bought my new TIG welding helmet today, thanks to your help, I was looking around the shop, and saw a small argon gas bottel, disposable, for around A$30 (Australian dollar). It looks like  the cost of the bottel would be more then the cost of the gas. If you can fill a bottel once, why not twice or many more times. What is the idea behind this silly thow away bottel, havn't we got enough of that.If you can refill a normal gas bottel, why not this one.  .  . Has anyone used them, and how long do they last? Would there be a law against refilling, and if so, how is behind that law.(Looking for a smilie opening a can of worms, but can't find any)Help me understand this silly thing.Michael_99
Reply:the idea behind these throw away bottles is that a home user can aford to use there welder it cost's to much to rent a full size cylinder for  home use un like our friends in the US we don't get to own the cylinders we can only rent and it cost's around 120+ aussie paso's to rent a G size a year then a round 110+ to get a refill so unless your your doing alot of work with it and making good bucks for home throw is the cheapest way to go Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:Wello, the way I see it is that they wants to make money from the bottle itself, and not the gas, filling a small bottle wound't cost a lot, but neither would filling a small LP GAS bottle, but nobody stops us from doing that. A bottle is a bottle, full stop. It's nothing but a rip off. Anyway, what's to stop me from refilling from a big bottle to a smaller bottle, all you need is the right hose.Punish the small user with more trow away stuff, as if we didn't already have enough of that. It really sucks big time. For the people in the US, can you refill small bottles? If yes, then why can't we, same gas.Michael_99
Reply:I don't think the disposable bottles are made to handle the fatigue of numerous fill cycles.  Other than that, a bottle is a bottle.Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:Disposable argon bottles??? What a waste.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Be careful refilling a small bottle from a big one.  Some of the bigger ones have more pressure to start than the smaller ones.  Make sure before you start.David  Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have a Miller Synchrowave 200 and do some TIG when I have time. I do Haz-Mat and Cargo tank enforcement for my occupation and I can tell you that unless these are stamped with a number they are non specification cylinders and you don't want to fool around with refilling them, remember less than 5 psi can kill you!!!!! Next time you are in your shop check out one of your oxygen cylinders look for the stampings, you might see  DOT 3AA480 this means it is a DOT Specification 3AA cylinder with a service pressure of 480 PSI, other stampings like 3-02 would mean the last test date was March 2002, a star indicates it is being retested every 10 years (product specific). Any questions about cylinders I'll be happy to answer or you can look up Cylinder requalifications under 49 CFR 180. Scooter MSP in Massachusetts

Reply:Today, I went back to the shop to have a close look at the disposable argon bottle and here is what I found.Bottle, full metal, 930cc, contains 60 ltr compressed gas, cost A$30=50c/ltr inclusive the bottle.A 4.9m3 bottle cost A$107 to refill. That's =0.2c/ltr.At that cost, it would cost 12 cent to fill the disposable bottle. And that woud last only 4-5 min, and it would be empty again. So, who is behind the rip off, the gas people, or the disposable bottle manufacture. You try to work it out.Just out of interest, what is the smallest bottle you can buy/rent it the US, and what would it cost to get it refilled?Regards Michael_99
