Anyone ever built their own boom? I have a miller S22 feeder that I'd like to mount on a boom. I'm trying to figure out what I would use for the spring to make the height adjustable and keep it steady. "Every choice you make will effect at least one other person"

Reply:Always wanted one, but the closest I got was mounting a 120V Lincoln wirefeeder on a lazy susan suspended from the ceiling above a welding table.  Worked okay for production work on that particular table...
Reply:One way to adjust the height is to hinge the boom and insert a hydraulic cylinder much like an engine hoist.  Some don't bother with elevation.  They set up a track overhead and hang the feeder on track wheels so that you can pull the feeder along the track.  I have used this style with the boom hinged horizontally on the wall and another that was rigid.  Heavy duty garage door track works well.

Reply:ours is mounted to the shed wall , goes out 8 metres or so in a 18 degree arc . and the feeder is on little wheels slides along the length of the beam , and we can take it off easy to move somewhere else . they work really good expecially if you like a clean work area and dont want everything on the floor getting damaged
Reply:We have the boom example as shown in the picture.  In fact we have two and I don't like them.  We also have a jointed boom that has one hinge on the post and one mid length on the boom.  Both hinge pins are vertical so that the arm extends like an elbow joint but horizontally.  Both versions are Lincoln.  The spring loaded boom is either too high to reach for adjustment or too low.  No matter which design is made having all the garbage off the floor is the cat's pajamas.   The feeder should hang so that the gun lead is tipped downward.  Some people even put a turnbuckle or bolt adjustment so that they can adjust the tipping.
