I've been trying a new 110volt spot welder, after using a Harbor Freight for a while, and I get splatter instantly at fairly mild pressure that on the Harbor Freight model was not a problem.1st Question: Is pressure the only cause of Spot Welder splatter or could it be that this a poorly designed model in some way? I'd think this would mean it has more/toomuch power. (with two pieces of 22 gauge there was an instant splatter and a hole clean through at firm pressure, a good weld at very light pressure)2nd Question: I'd much prefer to have the weld time controlled by an automatic timer and it seems this would be easy to do by adding a switch at the plug (and using the trigger on the unit as a safety measure only). Has anyone done this or have info?HF model that did not cause splatter as easily:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=45689This model which does:http://www.amazon.com/SPOT-WELDING-H...4382368&sr=8-2My project:http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=10573
Reply:Sounds like the pressure may be too light. Light contact pressure results in high resistance and thus high heating at that location. As far as poor design, sounds like the power supply works fine, I guess other design issues could include the tip size/shape and the pressure/lever arm design.Good idea to add a timer relay, should not be a big deal. |
