I'm considering buying a used craftsman stick welder for $75US as my first personal machine (operating on the theory that if/when I move up, this expense won't restrict me). It's 230amps, AC only, and comes with a fairly large quantity of build-up and hardfacing rods (which I have no experience with, nor the need for). There aren't any super-low end craftsman stick welders for sale in store at the moment, so I have no idea what it could have cost when new. Is $75 a good buy?One side question: is reversing polarity something that is done only on DC power supplies, or is it an issue with AC at all? Thanks guys.
Reply:If it works $75 is a fair price. Yes reverse polarity is a DC only term.
Reply:Very little can every go wrong with these machines. If it welds, $75 would be a good investment.
Reply:If you don't buy it, I will. I am looking for an AC stick welder like that right now but can't find a decent price on one locally. Everyone wants $200+ for them. It's a great deal if it works.
Reply:I own that model of welder. PM me if you have any specific questions. I might even have the original manual if you need to reference something. I would have to look for it.See my recent post about a problem I had with mine in the tig, mig, arc section. I have owned mine since new and had to do some servicing due to wear and tear over the years. No cost repairs, just took some time. Otherwise a descent machine. It has served me well. YD
Reply:Thanks for the perspectives guys. I love that little caveat when buying used stuff, a good deal "if it works." But it's really worth the gamble. I'd like to pick it up this weekend, waiting for the seller to get back to me, I hope he hasnt sold it in the last 12 hours since my email. It's been out there a while, I have a weird feeling that the Craftsman name is scaring some people away.YD, I'll check that thread out, thanks for the heads-upLast edited by Anachrophile; 07-19-2007 at 11:32 PM.
