HelloI'm considering doing a 1 year welding course at Aviron institue in Montreal Canada. (if anyone has any information ressources for different welding schools accross canada that would be amazing.)I would like to know if its possible to set up a life style with condensed work periods and then long off periods?for example; someone who works say 9 months 55-60hrs/week,2000hrs+/year but then takes 3 months off.or 1-3 months long hours and then 1-2 months offor say 6 months 80 hrs and then 6 off.or maybe 2 years of 60-70hrs and then 1 year off.you get the idea. it doesn't have to be anything specific. its just that i can't stand the 9-5. i would prefer to work hard and play hard.is this sort of thing possible for someone who has developped their skills and is willing to travel almost anywhere?what about say working for a company like halliburton in a combat zone like iraq or afghanistan how much would they pay?thanksany feedback is much appreciated.
Reply:LSI was needing welders in Iraq about a year ago. I haven't checked lately. If you go Iraq as a contractor you'll be working 12/6 or 12/7 for the year that you're over there. Maybe 1 short vacation during that year, maybe not. Your health will need to be near perfect. They used to take anybody but they've gotten a lot of people over ther and then found out that they didn't know anything or required lots of daily meds or frequent doctor visits. If you're not healthy enough to enlist in the army don't even try. They last folks I know that went over ther spent about 3 weeks Texas getting checked out and trained before going over there. That's not welding training but rather issued and trained on gas mask, what you can and can't do over there and stuff like that.
Reply:Down here in S. Ga they are always looking for guys to join travel teams, lots of hours, pay is much higher, per diem and travel expenses paid.  They also wanted welders to work down in Buloxi and New Orleans, last time I heard was about 6 months ago.  Try to google the Gulf Coast for welders.Laura MM 180Chop SawDewalt grinderhelpful husband
Reply:If you don't know how to weld right now...I'd say wait untill you do and then start looking...Ambition is one thing...Experience and Knowledge is another.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Maybe the Boilermakers or Pipefitters would be worth looking into. Travel with the power plant outages, work major hours during the outage, then wait for the next one. They have pretty strong unions too.

Reply:Olddad, I have a question about the certifications, journeyman cards.  I understand after completing my diploma program any job I apply for will require tests.  Let's say I get hired and work for awhile, what makes  you a "certified welder" My instructor said there's a bunch of tests but I never fully understood the entire process.  Am I correct on the ranks certified, journeyman, craftsmen, master, expert welder? Thanks.Laura MM 180Chop SawDewalt grinderhelpful husband
