As a few of you know, I am a gearhead.... Well, anyways my mustang has an 8.8 rear and I am getting ready to go through it to try to get some power to the ground. Several tech articles I have read suggest adding a few inches of weld where the axle tube goes into the center body... My Galaxie has a 9 inch, which is all fabbed steel anyways, as has everything else I have dealt with... I am a little uncertain on how to get a good MIG weld into the cast iron housing? The magazine of course just says fire up the MIG and point it at it... Yeah, I bet they really did it themselves... they say the axle tubes can get twisted free of the center... And when I am done I want to leave the line pretty hard with the car...OOPS- the mustang has an 8.8 rear in it, its a '95 GT, last of the pushrod mustangs.... Pushrod power forever!
Reply:welding cast, I would say try say try running 309 stainless wire or even silicone bronze. You could take a stick and run a 55 or 99 nickel rod as well. PM ZTFAB he would be the man to tell you about something like this.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The housing should be made of cast steel, er-70s2 should be fine.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:I welded my 8.8 center section to the tubes with a MiG about 5 years ago and have not had any problems bashing it on the rocks and off-roading. I have seen 8.8's that were not welded, spin the tubes - not a pretty sight!I tacked it in a few places first, then welded all the way around in one shot - no pre heat- worked fine. Correct method or not, it has held up fine.
Reply:No problem at all..Its just cast steel..Like stated..Tack..Go all the way around..No biggie.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You guys are awesome!I was just uncertain... and the mustang forums arent too much help on, well, anything so far...

Reply:Exactly! I dont find anything useful on the mustang forums yet, a LOT of speculation and very little field experience out of those guys... I met some older guys (not OLD, just older than me!) that have brought me light years ahead with the mechanicals and setting a car up, in exchange I MIG anything they ask me to... It has been a blast! And now I have found this forum and I can continue my metalwork education too Zap it looks to me like you might have a few interesting rides?
Reply:I could'nt help it.....these axle questions about GMAW ( aka mig ) were exactly my concerns at one time too. I have never had any problems w/ all the diffent brackets and spring purches that Iv'e welded to axles with this process. Here are some funky little brackets here on my fourwheeler. Just thought ya may like...They have taken lots of abuse weld it like you own it
