I had done some stainless MIG a few years ago and cannot remember what the gas is I need?I just remember people referring to it as "Tri-Mix", but I cannot remember ratios...working with material ranging from .065 to 1/4"

Reply:Yes argon or Tri mix. The tri mix is mostly argon with helium and co2.
Reply:Helium! ah-ha! I couldnt remember the third gas... I just remembered the 3rd gas made the process cleaner and easier... I may give straight argon a shot for fun though, as I doubt tri-mix is readily available in small tanks...

Reply:thanks pulser, saved a copy! I hadnt seen that one yet
Reply:I bought a 120v MIG last year for that same thickness range. I had a similar chart and thought I knew what I needed before I went down to AIRGAS. They recommended a tri-mix that consisted of Argon, CO2, and a small amount of O2. I bought the bottle and I have been real impressed with the outcome. Good welds, and easy to do.
Reply:I have a question.....I am going to be welding a piece of 3" 304 SS pipe to a mild steel piece using 308L and I have a 75/25 tank will it be ok? its just for a piece of turbo downpipe.
Reply:I haven't found tri mix in a small tanks, but if you are in good with your supplier, and have only a small amount to do, he may let you "borrow" a large tank. But Argon is sufficient.Bill |
