I have a Lincoln SP170.  I believe this is a SC only machine.  Please correct me if I am wrong.  My LWS sold me a Nozzle that allows the contact tip to be recessed 1/8".  From what I can find reading and searching, I should be using a flush tip nozzle for Short Circuit transfer.  Any input would be appreciated here!!  I am having trouble seeing the puddle since it is directly under the nozzle and wonder if this could be contributing to the problem.Rob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T
Reply:Just get yourself the longer tips to bring it flush. I've used them 1/8" beyond the nozzle a lot. Should be no problem to at least go flush.City of L.A. Reply:Yeh, flush for short circuit, recessed for spray. You won't spray with that machine.
Reply:I like having mine recessed.  When I'm tacking I can stick the nozzle where I want it and not worry about the tip sticking.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:I like the tip just unexposed so I don't tough it to the work.  I buy the recessed ones, then take a little off the gas cone to get the disired depth.  I really don't like those "adjustable" gas cones.   All of mine are screw on.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Well, that makes three of us who like the tip recessed.                                MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:OK, recessed it is.  I see the logic.  Now, how much should I reduce the gas over the recommended levels?  I am currently running at 18-20 cfh (?) in a sheltered area and 30 cfh (?) outside with light breezes. Thanks for everyones input and helping me get going on this!!!Rob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T
Reply:As we can see from the response to the first question, there are various ways to set the tip/nozzle depending on personal preference and the welding application.  If you need to get deep down into joint, you may have to cut the nozzle back or squish it narrower to make it work.  It doesn't matter what nozzle came with the gun, you'll have to figure out what works for you on your particular welding application.Same with gas flow, but even easier to figure out, set your nozzle the way you want, then make practice welds while adjusting gas flow untill you know what flow level is too low, then go up on flow from there to a safe level.  Not enough gas = porosity.
