Does anyone have experience with a good rust eater or inhibitor? I have a small trailer (actually the first project I ever built when I was learning) that I discovered has some SERIOUS rust issues. I have not used the trailer in a year or so, and went out to the barn this morning to discover that some idiot thru a bag of fertilizer in it, and left it there after it busted. Well anyway the nitrogen in the fertilizer has eat the sheet metal out of the floor and sides. It's not really gotten into the frame work yet, but you can see where the fertilizer has come into contact with it. I can repair the sheet metal floor and sides no problem, but I want to treat the frame with something to stop the chemical action so that it doesn't just continue to eat the frame or the new repair. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Yeh, any of the products with phosphoric acid are good for converting rust and blocking further rusting, but I don't know about that nitrogen. Maybe flush the heck out of it first.
Reply:Hammock,There's a product called OSPHO that is a combination rust remover/rust inhibitor. We use it around the marina all the time. Basis is phosphoric acid. Most any marine supplier or farm implement store should have it or be able to get it. Will leave a somewhat rough finish, but should be fine for a trailer.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:It's been years since I used it but I used to use metal etch. I allways got it at an auto paint store. It's probably another phosphoric acid product but I never looked at what was in it.

Reply:por 15 works well. clean the lid area off well before putting the lid back on, or the lid may not come off when you use it next time. kinda funny you asked, i am just starting to repaint my first welding project (trailer) i did my senior year of high school in 1980. seem like yesterday |
