wire is angering me

hey guys like the title says the spool of wire is angering me lol anyways here it is i bought a new welder the other day i set it up correctly and everything was fine then i was welding random things to practice and i wan out of wire so i went to cannadian tire an bought a spool as i was putting it on it ALL UNRAVALED i dunt kno y it ****ed me off tho i fed it thru and i put the locker thing on the spool but it still unraveled so i went to my intstuction manual lol and it said i need a sprimg betwwen the sppol or sumtin so if u guys could give me suggestion on how to set this up properly tht wuld be great its just cuz im rlly new at this
Reply:if you did not lock down the pinch rollers once you threded in the new wire it will unwind becouse there is no tension on the wire.i suspect the locker thing you put on was the spool lock to keep the spool on the shaftLast edited by paretrooper; 08-23-2007 at 04:13 AM.the day you stop learning in this tradeis the day your in your grave
Reply:Yes both the spool and the loose end of the wire must be clamped to keep it from unspooling. If possible it helps to secure the spool before freeing the loose end.
Reply:did you go to a smaller spool size when you got the new spool. On my machine when I run a large spool only the locking collar is needed, on smaller spools (8" or smaller) I need to have the compression spring between the spool and the locking collar, this helps keep the spool from moving on the shaft. Hope this helps.
Reply:i have the locking collar and and spool lock but i have no spring i tried using cardboard washer but tht didnt work any other suggestions and thx alot for the help guys
Reply:There should be a spring between the locking collar and the spool (at least on both my Millers there is). Reply:i have a mastercraft mig wire feed from crappy tire its alrite but ye in the intsructions it say to put the spring there ut i dont have one so were can i get a spring?
Reply:hehe, we've all been there.  You gotta have at least one rats nest of wire before you can call yourself a welder.  Learn from this, you probably won't let that happen again!
Reply:haha thx man i think i solved the problem i threw some washers inbetween the spool and the lock and it seems to be fine rite now but i still would like to purchase the spring
