Hi Guys and Gals, Just dragged home a 35 year old 5 foot bush hog type mower for my tractor. Its all there but needs major repair (projectile holes, rust etc). I did a resto on a hammer knife last year and it stayed inside, so no problem with rust. THIS thing is too big to keep in my shop, so it will sit out side during the entire process. Is the weldable primer any good? I will be using both Mig and Stick welders to repair this critter and It would take me a week to sandblast this thing. I am going to do it piecemeal as time and money allows. Any Ideas would be welcome from the more experienced in this group. I will be posting pics as it comes together ,Thanks, Wrench
Reply:What is THE weldable primer? The steel I weld on at work is all coated with a galvanized primer. We use dual-shield, sub-arc, and stick on it. I never have problems welding it.
Reply:Yep, what you are doing is one application it was developed for. As always, it's best to clean before welding if possible. It isn't ideal to 'weld through' weld through primers, just less problematic if you do.
Reply:I have used Bloxide with good success. You can even TIG through it. It is (as far as I can figure from the datasheet and MSDS) an aluminum powder coating with a low binder content. There are several other similar products. I tend to avoid the zinc containing primers if I am going to weld it, both due to fume concerns and contamination-- need good cleaning, and significant residue make MIG or TIG annoying.
Reply:thanks folks, yes will pre grind areas before welding, but want to paint as I go along, so if needed to redo something before the finish, I am not stuck grinding rustoleum out of the steel. |
