What is the difference between solid wire and flux-cored wire drive rolls?  I know that OD is OD so does it matter?  I am wondering if I can use my flux-cored rolls for solid wire, and if not then why.I noticed that my innershield rolls have tread on them and I don't remember that on my solid rolls.  Is this tread bad for the solid wire?  I imagine that it would destroy the copper layer on mild steel wire and could lead to corrosion inside the liner when not in use, but what about for stainless?Last edited by WelderBoy; 09-22-2007 at 11:38 AM.
Reply:I work with 5 different wire feeds and so far the only difference I have found is wire size the larger the wire the more aggressive the teeth are on the rollers deppending on brand of wire feed you might find one roller smooth and the other with teeth usualy the smooth is the idler and the teeth are on the driven , the only wire feed I have that is differnt from the rest is an old airco I have ( it has 4 rollers and there all driven and all have teeth , and as for wire there might be a little difference here and there but work the same , one thing to remeber is keep the felt wiper ring on any wire feed , thats what keeps the wire clean before it goes into sheath . so theres my 10cents .
Reply:rollers for cored wire is often gnurled (made with little teeth) to push the wire...Solid rollers are often v-shaped or U-shaped (aluminum) with smooth walls...having said that, my hobart feeder has gnurled rollers that are used for both solid and cored wire.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:The main problem is the gnurled drives flake the coating on solid wire which then plugs up the liner in high use applications. The felt wipers won't help that, only thing that helps is blowing the liner out frequently. For less than high use I would suppose keeping the liner blown out would suffice. Do not use any kind of wire lube if you run that set-up other than dry graphite. The lube will cement the dust like particles and junk the liner.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
