Probably a stupid question... But why couldnt you convert a mig welder to tig? Both run d/c right? Why not hook up a torch to the connections in the mig box and bypass the on/off button with a jumper wire. I dont know, maybe be far fetched, but I was just curious
Reply:MIG is CV power supply, TIG is CC power supply or drooping power. TIG happens around 12 to 14 volts. MIG happens at 16 and up to twenty something. I have heard of it, but never done it.MIG = Constant Voltage (CV). The welder or power supply keeps the welding voltage at what you set it at regardless of the current.TIG or stick is Constant Current (CC) The welder or power supply keeps the current the same regardless of the voltage. So in MY opinion, NOPE.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:OCV and Short circit Current are different in CC or CV power supplies, so your question wont work.
Reply:If you have the right power source you can switch back and forth from Mig, Tig, and Stick. The power source that I have in mind while saying this is a Miller XMT.
Reply:i bought a mac tools 135 mig , which was actually a miller and a tig torch was offered as a assesory . i tried it but you have little control of heat, hot and hotter !
Reply:Oh yes, avoid the laundry list of machinery and buy one killer multi-process machine! HOOWAH! edit: I traded my little Lincoln flux cored welder for an older, smaller, OA torch set today. Hmmm!
