Not one of mine, of course - I don't need an x-ray to confirm most of them are duds.I'd be curious to see an x-ray of a good one, and a lousy (failed) one.Anybody able to post x-ray pics of a weld?Scott
Reply:maybe pics out of a book.  Or I could even scan it.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I believe I have the film of our pipeline system welds in my archives at work.  I'll try to find some and post them.  I just have to go digging upstairs.  I'll try to scan them in.  I tried to photocopy an xray of my back problem today (by coincidence) and it just came out black.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene

Reply:google 'weld x-ray' and you'll get some pics- i'd guess most would be highlighting flaws though.a more visually interesting one would be 'weld macros'. the bonus with this one is you can test your own welds. all you need is a polished cross section of a weld and some nital (10% nitric acid in methanol for steel- different re-agents for other alloys).i believe you can get results with battery acid too but i've only ever used nital
Reply:pictures don't really do the things justice. in order to really get some good detail, you need to see them in person. i used to work for Northern Natural Gas in Omaha, NE and i got a hold of pack of x-rays (about 45-50 in all) for a pipeline project we did that previous month (the US DOT mandates that all the welds are sound and they want proof). anyway, they sat on a painted metal reack for 3 weeks and when i went to get them to start working on the project data sheets, they had eaten through the paint and had turned it to liquid, which soaked into the paper envelope they were in. it kind of scared me. for a little while, i thought of storing them in my desk drawer cuz i thought it'd be cool to look at them when i was bored at work. anyway, the ones i saw were about 8-10 inches long and about 2-3 inches wide, one weld per sheet. they almost looked like negative, black-and-white photo-transparancies, with that distinct radio-active scent to them. they almost looked like they were done on a computer becuase the welds were so perfectly done. they were very similar to WelderBoy's first picture, only straighter and more uniform. take a picture of your weld, turn it to back-and-white, then make it a negative of that. later,Andy

Reply:Following up on my post yesterday, I dug through my archives this AM and found a thousand films of x-ray welds. They were properly stored in their original, untouched film packages, in a dark place the whole time. Unfortunetely, they are so dark now that I can hardly see through them even when using the sun for backlighting.  They are 18 YO and I guess they just don't hold up very well over time. We have a new project going on now and I will try to get some fresh filmHobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
