So a guy I work with says he is building a swing out tire carrier for the back of his jeep. Now I have only been welding myself for about 3mos but when I asked him about the type of rods he used he says he used 7014's. I am pretty sure he's got a miller 220v. I believe 7014's are not the correct rod...am I wrong??Should'nt he have used a 6010's or a 7018's.Last edited by Stickbug; 03-24-2007 at 12:15 AM.
Reply:7014 should be plenty fine. Same strength rating as 7018. Those that like it really like it. It's sort of like 6013 only in the 70 series.
Reply:7014 is a Drag tecnique rod that is fast fill. It makes nice welds, works on AC or DC. All position. 6010 is for pipe and deep penatration. Everybody has their prefrence. I usually use MIG, but when I stick, 7018 because its called for in the prints.Any of the above will build a swing out spare tire carrier. If a guy runs 6010 all day at work, it would probably work best for him on that project too.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:well I'd just like to add that that guy is me . I was told 6010's by a guy who is a structural engineer and after telling him I was welding with the 7014 rods he said I should be using 6010's. Now I understand that because he is an engineer that he thinks overkill. Anyways I feel more at ease with my work now. Thanx guru's.
Reply:Over the last few months Ive learned something about 6010. Its mythological.Seems everybody and thier grandmother for many many years was told to use 6010 whether you like it or not. If you didnt like it you were wrong. Quite a few hard core welders used only 6010, but they knew how to manipulate it to the ends of the earth...Me, I like 6010/11 for the root pass and 7018 to go hog wild.ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:Ok I know that this thread is a little old but I just came across it today. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I always thought that E6010 was only used with DC Reverse Polarity. DC Straight Polarity and AC do not work well with this rod. E6011 on the other hand will work well on DCEP or AC.
Reply:You are correct the exception is 6010 is used DC- electrode to weld sheet at high speed. DC+ any other time.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor. |
