I am sure it has been discussed before, but my search on the forum didn't turn up anything about the properties of the metal of bed frames. Google search yielded little, but gave the impression they have quite variable quality and maybe too much carbon content. What are its properties? It appears to be brittle. Is it weldable? ?suitable for a welding cart frame? or just suitable for "junkyard art"?
Reply:The angle iron from bed rails is a high carbon steel. It can be welded. I have made two nice welding carts from them and a 55 gallon fish tank stand, the numbers on the fish tank stand are 55 gal of water weighs like 470#.To test the fish stand I put 600# on it no problems.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:I've made lots of stuff with it. That said, I wouldn't use it for a cart frame; I'd want something with more give. Some issues with it are when you have to drill or cut it with something other than a flame or an abrasive.
Reply:It's excellent metal and it welds beautifully. It's harder than mild steel. I made a cart for my water circulator from one recently. Cost me $2.00 at a thrift store for two side rails (12+ feet of 1-1/2" angle) Heh heh. My secret is out. Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set

Reply:Yep, you can always spot a hobby welder - he has a bed frame tied to the roof of the car. I mostly use them to make storage racks and frames. My kids grown whenever I slow down as I drive past a pile of junk outside someone's house. |
