I have just bought a tig welder to try and learn how to tig weld, but my experience is limited. The welds I need to do will all be the same, but I do not know how to set up the machine correctly or I am doing something really wrong. I am practicing on some scrap stainless at the moment, but not getting very far I want to practice just laying a bead down but it seem impossible for me to set the machine up I am working on 1.2 mm stainless 304 Tungsten tip is 1.6 and the filler wire is 1.6What should should I set the following too.Base Current Pulse Current, Pulse Freq. and Pulse width.Any help would be great.Beer is a sign that god wanted men to be happy
Reply:Forget the pulse stuff until you get a bead down.Plate is 1.2 MM. Filler is 1.6 mm. Its going to be a b*tch to weld plate that is thinner than your filler. Start around 60 or 70 amps with a foot pedal.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The plate just keeps heating up to much and distortingBeer is a sign that god wanted men to be happy
Reply:All you have to do is mention the word "heat" to stainless plate and warping will happen..Bend before you weld..http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...t=Bend+welding...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Get some 0.9mm filler wire and use less amps. You'll probably still get distortion but not as much if you put less heat in. Don't hang around either. Get in and get out. You should find a balance between not enough heat and a weld pool thats not fluid and won't flow (which causes you to travel too slow and introduces too much heat) and too much heat (caused by too higher amperage, which will coke the backside of your plate instantly). Time with the torch in your hand is usually whats needed to sort it out.
Reply:Do you have a foot control to control the heat. I think you have to large a Tungsten and to much current for the metal you are welding on. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:if you're just beginning to learn, 1.2mm stainless will not make life easy- especially as your using 1.6mm filler!!stainless (especially thin sheet) distorts massively given the chance. you'll learn much faster if you begin with thicker material (2 or 3mm) with 1.6 filler as distortion will less of an issue. as you get better progress to thinner materialleave the pulse alone for now- won't help you to learn puddle controlcurrent is way to high for 1.2mm stainless- 30 to 35amps should be finefiller needs to be thinner than base metal- i use mig wire (0.8mm) for this sort of thickness1.6mm tungsten is fine- sharpen to a fine point (grinding marks need to be lenthwise) |
