Hi everybody! I've heard that there isn't much to a welder: "Just a transformer and a switch". My question is, is it possible to weld with just a step-down 20v transformer and 1/16" rod (and eye protection, of course)? It's at least difficult, right? Arc stability? Is it dangerous? Will it trip a breaker if done wrong or anything? Supposedly, they do this in Africa.
Reply:To arc weld, you need an arc. Well, an arc and an electrode. I think I've read that some folks have done trail repairs to their vehicles with two batteries in series (giving a nominal 24V DC). And other folks have done things with wrenches or other tools and a single battery. Usually by accident. Or stupidity. But a 'good' welder (the machine) generally makes your life (and the welding and the welds) easier and gives better results. There's the whole inductance and adjustability 'thing' with a decent arc welder compared to rubbing two sticks together. So, what -is- your question?
Reply:I think you answered it. Electronics make it less of a hassle, like anything else, I guess.
Reply:Yes, an AC buzz box welder is little more than a transformer and a switch. Some don't even have a cooling fan. For a basic welder no electronic are required. Current is controlled by having a multi tap transformer. Could you rigg one up? Sure but why bother? By the time you made a case, bought an on/off switch that would take 50 amps, buy the plugs cables, ground clamp, rod holder, ect you could find a good used buzzbox that will probably last your lifetime. Check the garage sells and newspapers. Often $100 will get you a real welder in fine shape. |
