At work were constantly tossing old tables, desk and chairs,You know the heavy duty Formica, particleboard and bubble gum kind, [community college] Well the tops are junk but the legs are nice steel in different shapes [round, square, rectangle] mostly chrome finished. My question is is that stuff safe to weld on? I think Ive heard bad things about chromium Id start salvaging some for projects if its safeVictor SuperRanger O/A Solar migLincoln Powermig 140Southbend 9in lathe350# kohlswa anvilMiller Maxstar 150 stl etc....
Reply:You need to grind the finish off before you begin welding.
Reply:Here's a little info on chrome. http://www.thefabricator.com/Safety/...le.cfm?ID=1336Search for 'hexavalent' chrome and you find way more than you want. Clear up to the "abandon the planet" level. Just use common sense.

Reply:http://www.osha.gov/OshDoc/data_Gene...t_chromium.pdfPersonally I don't sweat it much other than it's a pain. Lot of stuff that's plated is thinner than I have a use for. Freebee stuff is all short pieces. A lot of the good plating is setting on a layer of copper too. Hard on band saw teeth. Sharp as a razor if it peels or flakes. Spits pops and raises heck when you don't get it off.If you are health conscious then you should read up. |
