Ok, I enrolled at a vocational school in Welding which started August 28 , 07. Because I am an adult I would usually had to take the night classes. However, it would have cost alot. The man who is over adult education told me that if there was still room when the high school kids enrolled, that I could have the option to take in the day hours with them. Get this, He said because I am an adult, that If I were willing to take the welding in the day, becuase obviously there are alot of adults that won't do it like this, He would spot me a scholarship for the schooling in which I would have to pay absolutely nothing. So here I am. My progress is ok but picking up. We started with a 5x5 inch pad and ran beads overlapping with the 6011 on both sides and then with the 7018 on both sides. After this I progressed to butt joints which I did well with  Had to have one done with 6011 and another one done with 7018. It took me a week to get one that would satisfy my instructor, which by the way is a great man. After that I went to lap joints. Again with 6011 and 7018.  Had to have one of each to meet my instructors criteria.  I finished that this past Friday. Now were in break for holidays and then when we return I will start t joints. Learning how to read the beads helps become more proficient than just welding metal to metal. How this sound as far as progress in your opinion. Am I going to slow or am I just fine? ThanksBrian
Reply:Seems like you're doing very well to me Brian, i think you can either weld or you can't, simple as...I like reading that it took you a week to pass the downhand butt, that to me tell's me your tutor won't accept garbage forcing you to do the business bigtime. My apprenticeship is the same. Quality over quantity, quantity comes later...From my experience we did the Lap > Fillet > Closed Corner to Butt as it was deemed the most difficult. Wash, rinse and repeat in the other positions...Keep it up, P.S this is a T joint of mine...http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=16613Jee Bonnie Scotland (Best Welders, end of!)Metaltrades.co.uk
Reply:Sounds like your doing great to me.   Just remember to practice practice practice, I cannot say that enough.  Sounds like a great instructor to give you the scholarship, smart move to take advantage of it.The Welder Shop has great deals and reviews on Hobart, Miller and Lincoln Welders.
Reply:Sounds like you're having fun. You'll definitely still be producing lower quality welds until you get hours under your belt. That's the beauty of experience. Love welding?  http://industrial-tools-equipment.com
