I have a job coming in the morning that I am not sure about as I have not done it before. I have to weld the axel tubes into the rear housing for a guy. What rod should I use for this or O/A or TIG, MIG?Of course MIG would be my first choice if 70s wire is okSA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1 RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!

Reply:Ok, it was an 8.8 ford with the plug welded holes. The guy wanted a bead around the outside. Wound up with stick 7018 due to the rust in the crack between the housing and the tubes. He was happy and I was tickled. We used the barter system and he is going to replace the condenser on my wifes ride in exchange. All I have to do is buy the part. Includes vacuum and recharge. I made out like a big dog, woo hoo.SA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1 RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!

I could be wrong but i also believe the pumpkin is cast steel and not iron... As far as the WHY in welding the axle tubes together.. its because the stock tubes have been known to spin out of the housing breaking the 2 spots welds on each tube.... so the tubes are welded to prevent this...
Reply:Originally Posted by CaptainWillyI wasnt wondering why the tubes were welded... just remebered some other thread someone was trying to weld a mild steel bracket to a cast iron housing and it was widely accepted to be impossible for strength. The factory plug welds really just lock the tubes in the housing and dont need to penetrate the housing. and if welding cast iron (the housing) to steel (the tubes) isnt strong. why bother? <---- trying to learn not be a jerk.refering to this discussion... http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=16543
Reply:The center section of the 8.8 is not cast iron. I used a grinder to try to remove the rust prior to welding and the sparks were bright yellow. It welded very easily with 7018 and did not show any signs of cracking. This unit was being readied for a mustang drag car, hence the beef up. And I did do him a favor as he could not find another weld shop that had time to do this small job in his time frame since he is the son of my friend and is due back in the marines and was just in from Irac. I would have done it for nothing but I had already talked to my friend about the condenser job and he offered the barter. Thanks to all our armed forces, we can have all these hobbies and freedom to talk about what the h@^%^ ever we want to, weather all agree or like it or not.
