ok what are weld positions and what do 3g,6g etc...mean?

Reply:guess I didnt explain good enough, sorry. 2 is horizontal and when you see a 2g designation for a pipe, the pipe is running vertical and the groove to be welded is horizontal. A 5g pipe would have the pipe running horizontal and the groove to be welded is going vertical up/down. 6g and the pipe is on a 45* oh and a 1g designation for a pipe is just flat rolled. hope that makes more sense.
Reply:From ANSI/AWS A3.0-94 Standard Welding Terms and Definitions:In the designations, the number (1-6) indicates position and the letter (G or F) indicates whether it it a Groove or Fillet weld.To elaborate on what westcoast welder said, for pipe:1G - axis of pipe is horizontal and is rotated while welding so the welder is always welding on top.2G - axis of pipe is vertical and axis of weld is horizontal. Just like 2G on plate except that, when welding you always end up right back where you started.3G - not used for pipe designations4G - also not used for pipe designations5G - axis of pipe is horizontal. However, unlike 1G pipe the pipe is not rotated during welding6G - axis of pipe is at a 45 degree angle, see following picture:Visit Tensaiteki.com
