bending tubing

have harbor fright pipe bender the damn thing always kinks my tubing... what other tools can be used to bend DOM tubing dont wanna risk kinking my new tubing. dont have money for better bender. Can it be bent with my oxy torch????
Reply:None that are inexpensive. You might have good results building your own bender, which uses a set of pricey dies, and a few people on here have had good results. Reply:i have heard that filling the pipe with sand can HELP reduce kinking issues, but won't eliminate them. can you use a larger bend radius? when spec'ing things at work, i try to stay with this equation: bend radius=1.5 x tube or pipe diameter, or larger. if it needs to be less than 1.5 times the diameter, i try to figure out some other way to take care of the situation than a bend.Later,Andy
Reply:Which HF Tubing bender do you have ??  I bend DOM tubing all the time with mine ,and a buddy of mine has a newer version and his always kinks the tubing.. we have made his quite a bit better now though we made some longer radius dies for the size ... good luck..

Reply:x2 on what Rojodiablo just said, they call those poop-pipe kinkers for a reason. I would just buy e real tubing bender and then sell it after you're done with thr project, I looked all over for a used bender before buying mine, most were less than $50 off the new price and sold before I could even contact the seller. That $50 loss is well worth it compared to filling every tube with sand and grinding out your dies to try and make them work right.I have a Pro-Tools 105 and it's a great bender, I've exceeded the maximum wall thickness by about triple nd it hold up great, I've also nearly trippled the money I spent on it doing a couple jobs for other people.

Reply:Rojo,  any spec I've seen puts 1 1/4" Sch 40 pipe at 1.660 OD.  Granted it's only .035" off of 1 5/8" but I think there will still be some distortion.  I spent a bunch of time twisting handrails on a Hossfeld bender and when the sliding block gets worn just a little, not enough to be visible, the pipe gets wider and has a flat on the OD of the bend.  This stuff is amazingly fussy about tolerances in the dies.
