Welding Zinc coating

I have subframe connectors that I am welding and it has a zinc coating. It is steel with zinc coatingHow will this affect my welding?I am going to use e7 wire .035" with 75/25 gas mixturePlease help me out.
Reply:Hey, you should remove the zinc coating where you want to weld because the fumes from welding on it will make you sick. So far i havent had the opportunity to use GMAW to weld on Galvinizing, well now that i think of it i welded a trampoline leg that broke at the weld, but i removed the zinc coating before i welded it anyway. So anyway, keep your head out of the fumes Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:As always, the cleaner the metal the better the results regardless of what the coating may be. With zinc there are additional reasons for removing the coating. As an additional note, when talking about zinc 'coatings' there really is such a wide range of what might be called a coating it's difficult to give a one size fits all answer. Everything from triple hot dipped to a micro film electro plate.

Reply:Originally Posted by SandyNo matter how you look at it the zinc is going to be a goner. Even if you didn't grind it off zinc combusts and completely burns up and off at welding temps. You'll want to or should do rust prevention for the whole attachment point anyhow. There are quite a number of zinc spray treatments out there, bright and flat. Cold Galv is sort of a catch all nic name. Or you can go with conventional primer and paint.
