Going through sticker shock after seeing what they want for steel at HD and Lowes. 1/4 x 12 x12 plate for $30.00 and 1/8 by 1" x  4ft plate for $8.00. Is that fair? All I need is junk to practice on. Good advice for metal supply other than the big box places? Or is that as good as anywhere? Thanks.Daniel 5:23
Reply:Keep your eyes out in the back of the box stores...walmart Lowes Homedepot etc...I just picked up two 11/2" x 11/2" 16 ga. angle carts with 6 casters from Costco...they toss out some good practice / project stuff from time to time....also ask at a fab shop...you could possibly pick up some drops cheap.....

Reply:Just hit your local metal scrapyard and buy some scrap - its .30-.35cents a lb in my area (for carbon steel that is).
Reply:Yeh, when you need steel look for steel suppliers. If you want scrap steel look for scrap dealers. The big box stores and hardware stores are for grampa that needs one little stick every ten years or so. It takes up space and doesn't move very fast, so they charge you for holding the space.
Reply:Do a search online or the yellow pages for actual metal suppliers in your area. Home depot/lowes are a ripoff and then some. what hope depot charges for a 4 foot peice of metal, you can usually get about 20 feet of the stuff for the same price at a metal supplier. Where you from?I like to party!
Reply:Got a welding shop close by? Some will let you scrounge their scrap pile for free or for a few cents a pound. Saves them having to haul it to the junk dealer.

Reply:The big box and hardware stores charge a lot so new weldors that buy it for practice have an incentive to get good real fast.   LOLDennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
Reply:The price of steel is getting pretty high anymore. I've had to re-think some projects because it is cheaper to buy something than it is to buy all the material to build it.
