I'm a new guy and have never struck an arc.  I have signed up at the Lincoln Welding School to learn and start in June - just a week long class on MIG.  I also own a website where I sell diesel performance parts and I have a few inventions I sell there as well.  I have an idea for a new product that I will be selling and it's a 12 gauge box for a specific application about 20" x 13" x 10" and I will be welding all the seams.  I was thinking of MIG welding the box and had my eye on a Lincoln 255c for the duty cycle of production work.  I'm now concerned with how the weld will look and clean up with the grinder after welding.  I won't be selling them until they are worthy of going in my truck!  I know TIG is more difficult, but I'm willing to spend the time to get good at it.  I can change my class to TIG at the school as well.  Since I've been doing all of my research on MIG, I would like to learn a little about TIG and see if it would be a better choice for what I'm trying to do.  If I were to go with a Lincoln precision TIG 185, what is the duty cycle of a machine like this?  How thick can I weld mild steel?  Is it infinitely adjustable or are there voltage "Taps" like the less expensive MIG machines? Is it a bad idea to learn TIG first?  Thanks.Don't believe everything you think.
Reply:Mig will be a lot easier to learn than tig.  either one of the welders will be more than enough to do what you want.  Mig would be faster than tig but warpage may be a problem.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
Reply:For me...TIG is pretty easy (I should have pictures up soon of my 5th TIG bead ever).  But I have never tried MIG other than a few tacks on a friends POS Hobart with no gas.  I have also had an Oxy/Ace class which is very helpful when TIG courses come around.  They are very close...one uses a flame, and the other uses an arc to acheive the "same" result.  You'll get lots of practice controlling the puddle while also controlling the filler rod.Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 180 AutoSetHobart Airforce 500iVictor O/A (80cf)
Reply:My problem learning TIG is that I've done so much gas welding, I keep wanting to pull the torch away to reduce heat!!!  I can't seem to beat it into my thick skull to just lift up on the pedal a little!  Course, the only TIG I seem to get on is my buddy's and he lives 6 hrs away, so I don't use it much.
Reply:I started with TIG when I was 9 and I totally believe it is the easiest to learn. I was able to create a good bead the first day I tried it. You can start and stop. You can go as slow or as fast as you like you have the pedal. You can fill holes. You can build up a spot. MIG is good for zinc coated metal. Or when you don't want to setup and TIG with a giant tungsten and torch.       Sincerely,             William McCormick
Reply:You used the key word. ...   PRODUCTION.   Mig is the way to go.  tig would take for ever.  Maybe be a little prettier, but......You said "grind my welds"   Why?  If they are proper, just leave them.I suggest you learn both.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:David wins. Tig is great, for what it's worth. But manual production welding?? There had better be a LOT of silver lining on the tunnel for it to be worth it. With practice, your mig welds will be very pleasing to the eye, and they will be strong as any tig weld. But, they will be about 3-4 times as fast, at the least. Especially if you are welding out of position, and fitting up lots of parts. Straight workbench tig can be pretty fast, but most welding winds up not being that way!!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:It will take you about 3 times (maybe more depending on your skill level) longer to tig weld your boxes than the mig will. Mig is also a good bit more economical. A good mig hand can make welds like you are describing that are as smooth as any tig you can do. On mild steel tig is kind of archaic sort of like O/A welding it. Looks pretty if done correctly, but too slow to be profitable. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I appreciate the advice.  I'll stick with MIG then.  Now I have to find a good 255c.  I had one in South Carolina that I was bidding on on eBay, but I didn't win it.  I really want to get one before class starts so I don't make my first weld in class.  I wouldn't have any bad habits if I did wait though!Don't believe everything you think.
Reply:I learned oxy-fuel welding first.  Teaches you basic puddle control and manipulation.  I would recommend that as the first process anyone new to welding should learn.
