I've never had the need to use an Acetylene cylinder in a position other than completely vertical, but, I am building a bottle rack for my truck and was wondering what the maximum angle an acetylene bottle can be used safely if any? I'm needing 45 degrees max.Yeah, yeah, I know you are a weldor too. But, are you a good one?
Reply:I think the DOT says they have to be transported upright, but that may be only if they are uncapped. From what I have read as long as the angle is enough to keep from drawing acetone out they are ok for use. I did an experiment just to see if there are any effects when flat, and on a full bottle there definitely is, but when the top of the bottle is raised about 10 inches it goes away. I'm not recommending that, nor will I vouch for the safety of doing it. Just something I did out of curiosity. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Thank you very much for the reply Jolly. To confirm your experiment, my supplier contacted his manager of ops. in Phoenix and said that the 45 deg angle would be no problem. Again Thanks! I'm happy I found this forum.....so many people with so many different experiences....KennyYeah, yeah, I know you are a weldor too. But, are you a good one?

Reply:I worked a couple of years in a potash mine before I moved to the oilfield. All our welding trailers in the hole (mine) had the acetylene bottle racks set at 45 degrees to clear the back (top of the mine shaft).  We never had any problems and we ran some big tips, #12 rosebuds and up to #4 cutting tips.

Reply:Here in Indiana you can't transport them without the cap on and definately not with the regulators still on,but as far as an angle?not sure but thats a good question for me to find out since I'm in the middle of building my rig also.I just wish I had a camara to post some picsIf it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger

Reply:Transporting cylinders capped without regulators attached may be a federal thing. Not supposed have regulators on your bottles when driving in NM either. I did it all the time and was never bothered. Don't know of anyone that has had problems with it here. I've had state police and DOT boys pass me on the highway and never even glance at me. The DOT is on everyone pretty hard. I was following a lady in an old Mercury yesterday morning and a DOT officer turned on his lights and whipped in front of me and pulled her over. First time I ever saw them stop a car but you see them with trucks stopped all the time, but never welding rigs.

Reply:NV, no catalog from my supplier. Where are you located? Nevada? If worse comes to worse, I can pick them up for you and ship......just a thought.Yeah, yeah, I know you are a weldor too. But, are you a good one?
Reply:the clam shell on ox and the ring on the acet will fit over regulators so u can leave the regulators on?
Reply:I'm not sure if the clamshell caps are legal anymore. The ones that I had, I made myself from a standard cap.Personally, I only carry a very small acetylene bottle on the truck (about 12" high) and I really only take it with me if I think I am going to have to gas weld or braze something. Acetylene can be some very dangerous stuff in an accident.I use propane to heat and burn, it's much safer to transport and lighter. I use a 20 pound Blue Rhino bottle $15 exchange at Walmart, 7-11s, and lots of gas stations. Most times I am never more than a mile away from one of these places if I run out, and they are open late, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Reply:45 degree angle is ok...transporting the cylinder flat might need you to have a cylinder cap insatlled and tie the cylinder or stop it from moving... The right way is upright or if you have a lot of cylinder and would need to transport it with a rack.using the gas on site with the cylinder flat will deplete the acetone catalysis faster than normal and will ensure a decrease of acetylene fill next time unless you add the lost acetone in prior to acetylene refill.
