Reply:I have an 11 but I'm having trouble seeing my weld clearly.  I read on Lincoln's site that the shade is merely for personal comfort and preference.  They said that all of the shades have 100% UV and IR blocking, and those are the rays that actually do the damage. So I'm thinking of finding a 10 or even a 9 to try out and see if I can see better with them.
Reply:it also depend if your wearing protective eye piece shade under the hood... I know I wear Oakley light sunglass in addition to the norm... I will only know when I test my first AD helmet OPTREL. Hopefully next month I can compare it with Miller elite...Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:You gotta be carefully going too low on the shade.... it may not do damage but when I use a shade 9 Its a little too bright and I get spots in my eyes.I like to party!

Reply:When welding with a passive lens, I use either 10 or 11, with my AD I stick to 10.5 or 11.5..I'm really starting to wonder.. what is a gold lens?  I've heard all kinds of things about them on this forum, but I have to say I don't think I've ever actually seen one? Is there a link someone can post up to a reputable "gold lens" dealer? I think I might like to try one.
Reply:http://www.thermadyne.com/IM_Uploads...3_CIGWE252.PDFhttp://www.scis.com.au/Products/SOMNI2412.aspxThe blurb says: "The pure gold coating reflects 99.9% of heat away from your eyes while the lens absorbs dangerous UV rays. The lens is virtually unbreakable." What do you think?Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:I typically use 10 or 11.  For spray, use 12 or higher, or you'll be seeing spots (if you're not blind already). You only get one set of eyes, and they can't do much to fix them once you mess them up.  I use a lens as dark as I can, and after 20+ years of welding, the eye doctor says I don't need to wear any glasses.
Reply:I use a 10 gold on everything. I wont use anything else.
Reply:I really like the Gold. I set the auto hood for 10 or 11 depending upon conditions and wrok being done.

Reply:I'll pass along something I read a long time ago about the effects or IR and UV rays on the eye. I believe the article was published by Lincoln and was before the effects of UV causing skin cancer was widely known. The general consensus was that UV, the burning rays only caused a lot of pain and had no long term effect. I would think that that line of reasoning has changed because it would stand to reason that it could cause cancer in the eye just like on the skin. The thing that really caught my attention was the effect IR has on the eye. IR destroys the rods and cones in the eye and this is what gives the ability to see. While this is happening there is no pain associated with it. You just gradually go blind. Glass blowers were given as an example because they didn't use eye protection. I've seen a lot of old welders that couldn' see worth a darn. None of them used eye protection when A/O welding or cutting which gives off a lot of IR. It made a believer out of me for GOOD eye protection.I've always used high quality lenses, usually Lincoln. That is the main reason I won't use a Chinese A/O welding helmet. I don't trust the quality of them. I don't have any eye problems except being pretty far sighted now which is what happens to everyone that has good vision when young. Use any lens that meets ANSI specs that lets you see the puddle clearly and doesn't leave spots before your eyes and you are in good shape.Sorry for such a long post.
Reply:as you may have already figured out, everyone's eyes are different. the general welding helmet (nearly any brand) that is of a fixed shade, passive lens variety usually come with a 10. the larger the number, the darker the shade. most people on here have welded for a long LONG time and as someone has already noted, long-term exposure will make your sight go bad, thus they need/want a little darker. i have always used a 10 (never need to change nor had the opportunity to change for free), and have had no problems with my helmet that was related to the lens. sometimes guys will use a slightly tinted pair of safety glasses behind their helmet (rather than clear) in order to "fine tune" their lens shade, or some times even go from a 10 to an 11 or 12, for different processes. Crews brand, Tremor model is the kind i use and i love them. i will probably never use a different style.as far as the gold lens go, the only real differences i have ever noticed have been the temperature within the hood (slightly cooler with the gold) and the color of the arc (slightly gold/yellow hue). the helmets that i have used at work all have gold lenses, but my home-helmet has a standard lincoln shade 10 and it seems to work fine for me. i am thinking of changing to a gold, but i don't really use it too much to justify changing for no real reason. as far as where to get one, we use our local supplier to get them at work (LinWeld). they don;t usually have them on the shelves for the general customers, but our supplier has always been able to grab a few for us.hope that helps.Later,Andy
