i have noticed that i have been seeing a lot of engineering students comming on to the forums trying to get answers to their tests. Not trying to knock any of them for using the internet as a resource. But the part that i think is messed up is they ask us for the answers and then want to get paid twice as much..... to me thats B.S. I have met a lot of engineers that were very knowledgable in their trade. There was no internet for them. it just seems the young guys just want everything handed to them.........i am not that old but i i was tought to earn what i get.63' Lincoln SA200 2008 miller trailblazer 302fibre-metal pipelinermiller camo BWEand all the guns and ammo a growin boy needs

Reply:When I went to college one of my best profs was my structural eng prof. He showed us a ton of calcs to determine loads and stress on beams and columns in order to size them. Then he had us do the calcs for a week until we understood them. After that he said he would show us how the were done in the "real world". He reduced the number of equations to 3-4 and gave us a set of table to plug the answers into. He said why go thru all the calcs for no reason and risk errors when the tables were available. This was for basic columns and beams, complicated ones would be worked out by a structural eng. As architects we weren't qualified to do those any how.I think that too few people learn how to collect and absorb information now days. Don't get me wrong I think the internet is a great resource. No one can know everything there is to know about everything. You need to learn where to look and when to ask and where. That said I believe that typing out a question and sitting back to wait for an answer is the lazy way. Having it handed to you is a poor way to learn. You need to work for the info in order to absorb and assimilate it. Without understanding why something is the info is almost useless. With out the ability to absorb the info we will never grow and develop new ideas. The aerospace industry is probably the best example I can think of. Kelly Johnson developed many ideas far ahead of their time. The U2 and SR71 are the best known. Everyone who knew anything would have said these were impossible. The technology didn't exist to make them feasible. Yet they were built and the technology was developed. He seemed to have a genius to pick and attract the right people with the knowledge needed for the job. Not just paper smarts but also those who understood how to build what they were making. The Apollo program (especially Apollo 13) and the F117 stealth fighter are also examples of this. I laugh when people say we couldn't go back to the moon. We did it before so why can't we go back. Just dig up the old info and reuse it. We've already solved the problems, just build the same thing. Since we know how we can do it faster. Now IMPROVING on the technology that might be somewhat more difficult to work out some bugs. The people who under stood the complicated problems aren't around anymore so we will have to relearn and reabsorb the basic problems. Most of the problems will come from the lack of industry exp. since we have lost a great deal of our mfg ability. Those of us at the ground level that can make the ideas work.I've actually worked on building houses that one of my profs designed. It was one of the worst designs you could possibly imagine. Nothing showed how to build it, yet it was so complicated it had 32 columns in the basement. Looked beautiful from the outside yet you could tell that he had no knowledge of the basics of putting a house together. I can list numerous jobs like this. The architects had the degree and the licence but couldn't build a shed if you gave them a kit! Some how we have to get back to the days where people who designed the items understood how to build the items. Until then I'm afraid that it will be a rough ride down hill from here.
Reply:this is why we run into so many problems. If a engineer has on the plans to use heavier than normal steel i say ok i don't have a problem with that. more work for me ok suck it up and stop the crybaby Bull$hit. but when they come in to lite or the bracing is all wrong i gotta step back and say who the hell are you and can i get the same degree at walmart. I am just a young buck at 29. most of you have been welding longer than i have been breathing. But i have been doing this for 15 yrs. i own my own welding/fabricating business. 4 yrs. in the U.S. Marine Corps. I think i have earned what i have and don't ask me to help you get higher than me and then spit in my face. Earn the title as the people before you did. So many ppl. in my generation are just to damn lazy sucking up freedom and liberties they don't deserve it pisses me off. I don't know how it is for engineers but for many yrs. many weldors would not even speak to me i guess due to my age now they open up more and more due to the fact we have been buiding on the same jobs for several years. this made me want to do things the old way to show them i could do it thir way. today they only want to do it the easy way........ i don't know ......................................63' Lincoln SA200 2008 miller trailblazer 302fibre-metal pipelinermiller camo BWEand all the guns and ammo a growin boy needs |
