I just picked up a 8pt cage for my drift car. Is there a way to check to make sure it's DOM tubing. He says the specs are 1.75 & .120 walls which i believe because he was using it for his drift car but isn't into drifting anymore and we have specs on what we need. I also know him personally. Also, when welding the base plates what exactly do those weld to? I'm new to welding cages but i figured i can figure it out. It's All pre-bent and notched where it needs to be unless i need to modify them. It all just needs to be welded together in the car.Are there specific angles in which the tubing needs to be?If i need to notch the tube what can i use to do so?Also, if anyone is local in IL and is willing to maybe spend an hour or 2 one day helping and guiding me please let me know. I'm located in the NW suburbs of IL.It's a cage from S&W racing. Thanks for any info.
Reply:Maybe some instructions from the fabricator may help. Angles and all that, I would never guess without seeing the car, so I can't say at all. And truthfully, neither would anyone who hasn't even seen pictures of it. Maybe- I know this sounds crass, but get some clamps and duct tape, and get inside and do a basic layout. If everything is notched and bent, you should be able to get an idea where it all goes. Put it together, duct tape style, and then start a pattern for layout and assembly. Acetone cleans off duct tape goo easily. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:DOM tubing is very round inside and out and there is NO SEAM inside the tube.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:thanks for the input.Anyone else?
Reply:^What did you pick up as a drift car? Sorry for being off topic. I love drifting
Reply:I've had my 240 for about 4 years now.Looks like this but alot has changed lolApril 6th will be my 8th event.BuMP!
Reply:wow i expected alot more reply's lolBump
Reply:^Nice!I have an S14 with a VH45de and 300zxtt 5spd going in.Which I will be posting a build thread when I move and have a nice TIG machine to do it adequately.I can't help much with the cage thing. All I can say is the baseplates need to be welded to the floor. It also depends on what division of drifting you plan on entering. As different divisions and event hosts may use completely different sanctioning bodies. I think I said that right. I haven't looked in a little while myself. Best bet would be to aquire a spec sheet for the cage from the sanctioning body.
Reply:As Zap said DOM is seamless..As for notching we now use a harbor freight tubing notcher( cheep),with good quality hole saws(expensive). Before we did it the old fashion way, with an angle grinder(expect to have alot of time on your hands)...When your done for the day you will be ready for one of theseHave fun with your project...I wonder if I will be spanked for this one too!?!
