I am think to build an entertainment center. I am going to stacked it due to space. We have an older TV, still works well. I will probably make some provision for a flat screen in the future. Anyone built one before??Thanks, DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!
Reply:Not by welding! Iv'e built several out of wood for clients while doing basement remodels. The primary thing to think about is the depth of the TV and stereo / video equipment. Some I build using of kitchen cabinets. A nice set of base cabinets will give you plenty of depth for electronics and a place to sit the TV. You have a lot of width choices, doors or drawers for storage and a ton of style/finnish options. Uppers can be made from wall cabinets stacked. Again a wide choice of widths and either open shelves or doors, solid or glass faced.I have also used wall cabinets for bases, Usually for bars. Sit them on a 2x4 frame for the toe kick. Most wall cabinets are 12" deep and a little thin for most electronics, but I have had some that will fit. My DVD / VCR is only about 9"deep. You can also get deeper wall cabinets for over fridges but you are more limited in sizes.Tops can be wood, laminate or whatever.Building it from scratch and making it look real nice is tough without the right woodworking tools. Good table saw at a minimum. Router and chopsaw are nice to have.If you build it from steel I want pictures! I can visualize some realy nice wrought iron shelves for the uppers but not quite sure on the lower storage.Flat screens are the way to go. Most likely the deepest thing you will have to deal with is the TV, old tube type. Most flat screens will fit in anything that will hold the rest of your electronics. I mount a ton of them on custom fireplace mantels, somthing that would be imposible to do with a standard TV.If you want suround sound, wires can be hid in the base molding sometimes.Hope this helps, fire away if you need more help.
Reply:Of course by welding!I am picturing a framework of square tubing, chromed, powder coated, or stainless, with clear or smoked glass tops, shelves, and doors!JeffLINCOLN IdealArc Tig 300/300LINCOLN SP135+ MigNAPA buzz boxHARRIS Oxy-Acetylene Torch SetMILLER  and Harbor Freight AD HelmetsHarbor Freight Tig, Plasma & Spot
Reply:I am thinking tubing 1 x 1 x 1/8" wall or maybe 14 gauge. No doors and the shelves will be expanded metal. Basically a very simple design.  I will probably build it in 2 sections and stacked. This way I will be able get it in and out of the basement. DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!
