HELLO TO ALL,a few weeks ago, a bucket truck going east bound onhyw 40, in st. louis county. the boom came loose, andstruck a bridge, and it punctured two beams. of coursethe repair was made by welding, but it would be interestingto see exactly how the repair was made.  was a patch weldedover the hole, was a patch flush welded in the hole. i guess wewill never know, unless MODOT made a video of the repair.wlbrown
Reply:more than likely the damaged area was cut out with a torch. then the cut ends were preped with a bevel. Next a new section of beam was cut to fit and spliced with a full pen weld and ultrasonically inspected.
Reply:are you saying a flush patch? i think this would bestronger than just a patch welded over the hole.anyway i sent MODOT a question, and ask them ifthey knew how it was repaired, and if a video wasmade. just curious. wlbrown
Reply:It sounds like there was damage to a horizontal beam. If so, the damaged area will be removed and a new section fit and welded.
Reply:If it was MODOT probably bondo
Reply:I work for Canada's second largest bridge manufacturer...I would say that the beam was ultrasounded and inspected for cracks, any cracks would be gouged, and any split or punctured area's would be removed and a new peice of bridge plate would have been welded in place.  if something had to be removed, 100% pen. welds would be required and ALL repairs would be made with 8018 unless otherwise specified. Not sure what the codes are in the area? and then Q/A'd again with ultrasound.
