Canadian CWB certified Shop to add AWS cert.

Hello all.I'm an Eng. Tech. working for a larger Fab/Welding shop on the west coast of Canada.We do a lot of over sized marine work and since we are situated between AK and WA we come across quite a bit of US barge and ship repair work as they are passing though.We are CWB 47.1 and 47.2 certified.I have been tasked with the job to find out what it would take/cost to become certified with AWS.I have been though AWS's website and find it rather confusing...and they haven't replied to any of my emails. They almost make sound like it is a voluntary membership more then a certification???Would we need to be audited by AWS, or would our CWB certification be sufficient.Thanks in advance.
Reply:typically you will write a QC manual that states you will follow aws D1.*. I think aws has just started a certification program for fabricators, although if you are going through that much trouble i would suggest certifying to AISC. It's more recognized. ABS might be another way to go due to your marine work.
