A potential customer called me, he wanted me to modify a 12 bolt axle destined for his 900hp Camaro. He wanted me to box and reinforce the axle with plate. I said sure, no problem. Then... he asked if it's ok for me to plate it with Ti. After much explanation and convincing, he began to understand why you don't use Ti in this case (nutshell: flex and crack like crazy) and he needs to go with 4130 plate. I also explained why doing this job in Ti would cost him another $6000 .Anyways, just wanted to share my funny. He is a very intelligent person, and like most, just assumed that Ti is the ultimate metal in all applications.LaterJimmy
Reply:At least I don't get all of the screwballs. That's not as bad as the guy that wanted me to build the aluminum frame for his crash proof airplane. I told him we were too busy. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:well I would just like to say that Ti is the ultimate metal in all applications!!!!! and having worked for several drag race car shops 4130 is the standard in 9" sheet metal rear end housings but a certain fabricator in my area(along with several others nationwide) make sheet metal housings out of Ti for pro stock/pro mod cars that have close to 2500 horsepower, the cost is anywhere from 20,000-30,000$ rather than 3,000-5,000$ for a housing made fo 4130 and still hold up. |
