I have a HF 90amp Flux Wire Welder. It uses .030 or .035 wire. What is the max size metal I can weld??? I am building a trailer that I am looking at using 3/16 rectangular metal for the frame. Is this welder sufficient????Should I use .035 flux wire on Max setting when welding the 3/16 tubing?????
Reply:have you welded before?  I would try welding up thinner pieces.  see how well  it can  penetrate.I don't trust those machines to do a trailer with.  but then again I have'nt  welded with one of those machines.
Reply:In my opinion, don't try it. There would be zero margin for error in technique and no comfort factor at all. Even tho technique can overide certain limitations in equipment this is just too much.
Reply:Did you get a book with this thing? Read it.
Reply:tcr1016,Unless the trailer's one you pull behind your riding mower, I wouldn't recommend you try building it with that welder.Building trailers that go "over the road" are not recommended for novice welders.  You're better off getting one prebuild or have one built by someone who knows what they're doing.  Based on your comments, you're not ready (and neither is your welder) to take on that project.Dave (Dabar39 on Miller) will go bonkers with this one.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:I have one of those welders and I not a expert welder by any means I think that 1/8 is pushing the limits of the machine. and thats with good prep and fitment.HobbyistLincoln 175 with gasLincoln 225 ac arcLongivity LC 416D Multi MachineHF mig 1004x6 bandsawSmithy AT 300 3n1 HF Compact Bender40x48 shopmajor tool habit!
Reply:1/8 but joint with no V likely your not even going to get full penetration esp in the first half inch or so of every bead.3/16 tube, no way, your only going to get in about half way with the weld. If you made it out of 3/16 angle or channel and welded inside and out with good V fittups maybe.
Reply:You can pile wire on metal and it will look like it's  welded to the untrained eye but a realistic max thickness would be 12 guage and that iffy when your talking about a 90* fillet weld. Sure you can lap weld 1/8 maybe even but weld it if you bevel it but not for anything critical. if your low on money get a 240 volt stick welder second hand from a pawn shop.

Reply:Ok, I'll be good. Grab you some 2 in 3/16 flat stock, weld up a few chuncks and do that Charrpy bend test on it. If it passes you are in. If it doesn't pass you are out.
Reply:Everyone else has pretty much nailed it. Thats not the machine for the job, and you need to know what you are doing to weld on trailers. Thats not a good "learning" project. As Jolly Roger said look into a class at a CC or local Votec school. A basic 220v stick machine has the umph to weld that thickness but you still need the skills to make good welds EVERY time.Good luck.
