So I posted a WTB in the local craigslist for a small welding cylinder for my MIG welder.  Guy responds having a 125 cu ft tank for sale and I go pick it up for $50.  I take it back to my welding store that told me they would swap any tank and alas, they would swap any tank only 80 cu ft or less.  The tank is a Linde tank and I took it back to Linde so I guess I am out of luck.  Just posting this as a heads up for newbies.I doubt I will get my money back, so what is a cool thing to build out of an old tank?Chris
Reply:Well, I've seen very nice gongs made out of rejected tanks.  The alloy in these high pressure tanks "rings" very well. That being said, maybe you should look for another distributor. My distributor will happily exchange any tank I've got (and I've got a 140CF acetylene, and a 125CF oxygen), so long as he's got it in stock.  There's a charge if your tank is out of certification, and he normally just refills smaller tanks (unless you have a need for a tank that has been vacuum purged, and filled with high purity gas, like the argon you want for aluminum GTAW work), but I've had no problem exchanging my 125CF oxygen tank, which other than the valve, is the same as your tank.I will say, that many distributors will not let you leave with a tank 80CF and over, without proper valve covers.
Reply:I my ride back from Linde I called 6 welding shops, 5 in Boston and 1 in New Hampshire and none of them will touch them.  The other problem is the last cert was in 1971 I think I am going to convert it into a compressed air storage cylinder.Chris
Reply:Don't feel bad, I have the large oxy and accy tanks but in my town they will not fill them unless you have a business lic. They will fill the meduim and the small tanks with no lic.  but not the large   go figure   I don't see what the difference is, a tank is a tank right?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]weekend metal melter and all around pain
Reply:Have the seller give you a transfer of ownership..... in my area a 160 is the largest they will sell you but I have a 251 oxy that they swap out for me no problem...... I just bring in my receipt that has customer owned cylinder on it......if nothing else sell it on ebay.....
Reply:Try a medical gas supply house. They can fill Argon in your tank. You will have to pay for a test first. It's worth a try.btw. My medical supply fills for less cost than my LWS. It's not a exchange, they fill my tank.
Reply:*chris*,Try Thoroughbred Industrial Cylinder Exchange http://www.gaspony.com/ at your nearest TSC (north of Nashus near Bedford, CT) or direct retailer (Spencer, MA).  Logon and review the 'Important Exchange Rules' in the Safety pull-down to make sure your tank meets their trade-in requirements.  If it does, you fill out an Owner Acknowledgement form to declare you as the cylinder owner and pay a $19 one time exchange fee.  The 125cuft cylinder is their #4 which runs $39.99 for the contents at my local TSC.  It's more than the LWS but their 5 minutes away (7 days a week) verses the 50 mile round trip alternative.  Only thing is, most outlets don't carry any 100% argon or the 330/390 argon/argon co2 cylinders which have to be ordered in advance.Might keep you from having to make a planter out of your 125.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Unbelievable, American Gas Products in Everett whom said over the phone they would recert _any_ tank rejected it as well.I have already wasted too much gasoline and time with this damn thing, I am going to turn it into a compressed air cylinder.  Duane, I read their cylinder requirements and mine with fail the "full label" requirement.  I am really surprised that my local shop wouldn't just eat this cylinder to get me to buy the gas.  I have been buying gas and supplies from them quite regularly.Chris
Reply:Sorry 'bout that Chris.  Did they say why?It was worth a try but at least you'll still get SOME good use out of it.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Linde sure did sell tanks. I have had several. What you are probably running into is the stupid regional rules regarding cylinders. I can swap anything up to 150cf all day long ..even those with stamped neck rings. Here, no cyl under 225cf is leased or rented. Everything under 225cf is an owner bottle. Here, you could get it swapped out after paying for the retest and contents...and no one would say a word. I do it all the time....but that is here and doesn't help you. Cylinder rules are very area specific. If the companies in your area won't take it...you need to change areas to get something that will work. It is possible you could go to an Airgas or somewhere in another state nearby to get it swapped out...or not. It can be done, but it may take some phone calls first and then some driving. It just all depends on what its worth to ya. Before you do that, you need to find out why they won't swap it and what they will. Maybe they won't do that size, the stamped ring or they just don't want business. A few quick cold calls will tell what you need to know.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
