so i have been welding on scrap steel and now i want to do a real project so i found the closest metal place to my house http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/MSC-home.aspxnow Im confused on what metal to get I am planning on making a lacrosse goal I have a 110  mig welder

Reply:Zafo, for first projects, I suggest you build small stuff you can make with metal that is good, and clean, but in remnant barrels or scrap racks. I can usually find lots of sq. tube, angle, plate, etc. in lengths from 2ft. to 10ft. Almost all my plate projects are made with rems of various sizes. I am not interested in keeping a 10ftx 3ft sheet around if I don't need it.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
