Advice for new graduates

Hi all,You all have been so helpful in the past, I'd like to get your input. Son will be graduating soon from welding school, cert as Master Welder.  He wants to see the world--- like yesterday-lol.  He is 19 and wants to go overseas.  We are trying to convince him to get some solid job expereince in first. Any ideas or thoughts that we could pass on to him? Thanx in advance!
Reply:A welding job is not all encompassed by what he learned in school. He has a lot to learn yet and especially about safty. Safty is not as important in over seas jobs as it is here. He should work here for a few years to get experience in being on job sites before he goes over seas. Just knowing where to be when things are being done on site can save your butt. He needs to learn these things first.
Reply:Well I have been welding since 1979 and many AWS and ASME certs and I am a AWS Certified Welding Inspector and have never herd of this Master welder cert. What I can say is at 19 he don't know sh!t from shinola yet. Sure he can weld and is likely vary good, at welding. Can he fit? Can he make repairs? Can he show up on time every day for the next year? Can he show any experience?. Tell him to sweat it out for a year in a fab shop. Or spent a year in an apprentice program. He might get lucky who knows? Might get picked up by some overseas out fit. Welders are in demand. Send him to Alaska next spring and he can start in the apprentice program to be an Ironworker in a few years. Nice to be young and know it all. As Pops said tow ears tow eyes one mouth all to be used in that ratio.  TJ
Reply:He may be able to blow smoke on his Mom, but if he walks into a real world welding job and uses the term "Master Welder Cert" they will laugh, and throw things at him on his way out the door. And talk about that one for years.Nobody comes out of school ready for the workforce in the welding field, unless you're looking at entry level low paying mig trigger puller jobs.JTMcC.

Reply:Any Union apprenticeship is 6,000 hours of paid feild work and then 2 or 3 months combined classroom time. Your looking at 4 or 5 years and Journeyman Status in your respective feild. What ever the Master Welder Cert entails, I haven't heard of it translating over.                If he wanted to see the world he should have skipped the master welder school and visited a marine corps recruiter. I saw lots of different states and  countries before I saw legal age to even buy a beer.  Better yet Uncle Sugar could have helped him a little here and there, I'm scared to even know how much that Master Welder Cert cost in tuition.
Reply:master welder cert huh? LOL i am a journeyman welder for the local 230. but man i think i need to get me one of these master certs! what school is this?
Reply:Never heard of a Master Welder cert. I don't know about other areas of welding as I spent my life welding in the oil industry but I can tell you there is a hell of a lot more to welding than just being able to run a bead in that particular field. I'm pretty sure that will hold true in all welding fields.

Reply:Reguardless of whatever certs he might get I know of no company that would send someone overseas without being able to produce a varifiable resume.  One company I worked for got burned pretty bad by hiring anybody with a good resume for overseas jobs. Now you have to be able to pass a medical exam, basically you must be as fit as a deployable soldeir. You must be able to commit to a long term deal typically 1 year or more. The choice jobs are going to go to the poeple who have shown that they've worked overseas before. This isn't a must but it will be a deciding factor if the company is swampped with applicants. Like others have said try to get into a union trianing program if he can.some of it will be a repeat but you can't beat the benifits and once he's in the union will try it's best to keep him working.
Reply:That can be a bit of a bother, the control items are not wow gold  rich to get all the version. But you commonly can get any for not too unlogical prices in the merchantability commercialism, and work a embellish get.
