i have to take a test next week on 2 in sch 160 pipe tig root and hot and 7018 out i just dont understand why it wouldnt be tig all the way out. has any one taken this test lately its in the 6g i think its kinda difficultComplete Fabrication Shop specializing in pipe fabrication. Reply:I was talking to the guy I have been working for lately, he runs a pipeline company here in SoCal. He told me about this very scenario the other day. I was curios as to why; he told me there was less issue with start/ stops in the field with stick top pass rather than tig all the way through. There were other reasons, but I did not have any reason for him to elaborate, so I don't know the other reasons he had for the process. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:I had to take one recently, and I think it was just to see how well you can get stops and starts, and to verify that you can put down multiple passes without slag inclusions.
Reply:yea this is for a pipeline contractor tooComplete Fabrication Shop specializing in pipe fabrication. Also offering heavy steel fabrication and sheet metal work.
Reply:The code used that provides the rules for welder performance qualification that are typical for pipe welding in the US is ASME Sec IX.For most situations Sec IX indicated that if a welder deposits X weld metal for a given process he/she is qualified to deposit up to 2X for that process in production. So for whatever thickness you deposit with GTAW and SMAW, you will be qualified for 2X that deposited weld metal thickness (not joint thickness as that is unlimited).I have taken the test on 2" sch 80 160 and 2-1/2" XX strong. The advantage of using something a little over 1/2" is that you can put the root in with tig (.052) and then the remainder (1/2") with SMAW. With ASME rules, if a welder deposits 1/2" with a given process and they deposited at least 3 layers, then they are qualified for unlimited deposited weld metal thicknesses. The commonarc test given at various boilermaker halls is done on a heavy wall coupon. GTAW root only then the reminder SMAW. It is typically performed in the 6G position. Here is one after the bends were cut out. This was 1 pass of Tig, One pass of 3/32" 7018 and the remainder 1/8" 7018.Have a nice dayhttp://www.weldingdata.com/
