stick welding overhead

What is the trick for stick welding overhead joints? I am welding 1 1/2" x 1/8" square tubing and the puddle keeps falling down. I have 6011, 6013, and 7018 rods. Thanks
Reply:Speed up your travel and try not to weave much.  What rod are you using?  Size, and at what amperage?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:6011 & 6013 1/8" diameter at 90 amps. My machine is only AC. Thanks
Reply:If you're stuck with AC only try 3/32 6011.  Give it a little forward then back whip.

Reply:In my oponion throw away the 6013's.
Reply:out of the 3 rods you have, the 6011 is the only fast freeze which is what you need to be using if you are having trouble welding overhead. It was easier for me when I first started to learn overhead to concentrate on speed using drag only and no weave.
Reply:be sure ur in a comfortable position , use leathers to keep urself protected from falling molten, use the proper heat setting
Reply:There is nothing wrong using 6013.The slag from 6011 will burn holes in clothing much more so than the 6013.6013 is a general purpose rod.6013 is a medium penetration rod and medium build up.6011 is a fast freeze deep penetrating rod with very low build up.The whipping motion recommended is acutally a forward movement of the rod 1/2 inch THEN back 3/8 then forward 1/2 and back 3/8 ..ETC..There is a trick to overhead welding. The name "overhead" welding is slightly misleading.Although the weldment may be overhead, the position that you take to weld the overhead weldment is NOT directly underneath the weldment.You should be positioned slightly ahead and off to the side of the weld groove.So the skill is in depth perception, to see the welding rod coming towards you.Remember if the welding slag is dripping down on you ,you are not exactly in the correct position. Like I say slightly off to the side and ahead ,or in front of the actual weld pool.Try a dry run just to get the idea.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
