I have a guy who is helping me with my truck.  I am replacing my oil-cooler and he was telling me he dropped one  and broke off a corner.  I told him I would look into what it would take to weld it back.So I am here asking the welding gods ( sucking up never hurt), what needs to be done....
Reply:"pot metal" may or may not be weldable.  Are we talking about a corner of cooling fin but it otherwise works?
Reply:no it is not the fin.  I is one of the corner when a bolt would go through.
Reply:Braze it.
Reply:Good luck if its some kind of zinc, Pot metal like some carbs can be a real pain in the azz.My instructor told me to take the same kind of metal, melt it, pour it in a piece of angle to make a rod out of it and torch weld it using the rod you made as filler.  It worked for me once. What truck, where is the oil cooler?  Most are aluminum.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I'd almost bet it's cast aluminum.  I've repaired these before with TIG.  Pot (or White Metal) can be brazed with a low temp alloy, but repairs generally suck.  I know Cronatron and Eutectic sell a product for white metal, expensive.
Reply:It's coming off a F350.  I thought it was Alum.  But he says it pot.
Reply:If it's pot metal, you're gonna play heck welding it.  I'd go with brazing.  Take it down to your LWD and they'll give you the right rod.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Alladin 3 in 1 rods are supposed to braze/weld pot metal.  http://www.aladdin3in1.com/catalog.htmTeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
